Full Catalogue Entry Lot 139: FRANCO-ITALIAN GREEK MYTH PAINTING (Renaissance period, France or Italy) - Oil on canvas painting of a Greek character covered by a red robe reclining with a staff in the crook of his arm in the countryside. The subject appears to be Dionysus (Bacchus) with his Thyrsus staff wrapped with tainia ribbon. Painted in the traditional French and Italian renaissance style, the figure has a mixture of child and adult attributes. Craquelure and age-related darkening is evident. The original hemp canvas has been relined and nailed to a new stretcher bar - most likely within the last 150 years. In-painting and patchwork can be seen under UV light with most having been done in the shadows and background. One spot of repair on the cheek of the subject is somewhat visible without blacklight. Some edges of the painting are tattered from age. Frame is dry-rotted. Canvas measures 38.5"L x 29"W; frame 44.5"L x 35"W
Estimate $ 750-1,000
